Double Chance

A bet covering two of three soccer outcomes (home/draw, away/draw, or home/away), cutting risk for lower odds.

A double chance bet lets you cover two of the three possible results in a soccer match with a single ticket. Standard three-way soccer betting gives you home win, away win, or draw. Double chance fuses two of those into one pick: home or draw (1X), away or draw (X2), or home or away (12). Cover two outcomes instead of one and your odds of winning climb, but you swallow lower odds for the privilege.

It’s a favorite of bettors who lean one way but want a cushion against the draw, which lands in roughly 25 to 30 percent of soccer matches. Instead of staking everything on a single result, double chance hands cautious bettors and shaky matchups a built-in safety net.

The trade-off is blunt: a higher chance of winning comes with a much smaller payout than a straight three-way bet. The odds simply mirror the combined probability of the two outcomes you’ve covered. In heavily one-sided matches, a home or draw line can sit at razor-thin odds, leaving barely any profit.

Example

Manchester United hosts a mid-table side. The three-way odds: United to win at -130, the draw at +240, the away team at +400. You’re fairly sure United takes it but want protection against a draw. So you place a $100 double chance bet on “Home or Draw” (1X) at -300. If United wins or it ends level, you cash. Your $100 returns $33.33 in profit. Only an outright away win costs you the $100 stake. You swapped bigger upside for a far better shot at winning.

Key Points

  • Covers two of three outcomes: Double chance fuses two results into one wager, such as home/draw, away/draw, or home/away.
  • Lower odds, higher win probability: Covering two outcomes slashes the odds compared to a standard three-way bet.
  • Protection against the draw: The classic use is backing a team while shielding yourself from soccer’s frequent draws.
  • Primarily a soccer market: Double chance shows up almost only in soccer, thanks to the three-way nature of match results in that sport.
  • Useful for cautious bettors: It’s built for bettors who want to dial down risk and will trade smaller returns for steadier results.
